First of all Happy Easter to you all.

It is now Easter Monday and spring break-up is in the air and we all want to take a little time off and recharge our batteries. At least those in the oilpatch that have returned home to visit family. Rural Albertans are very busy. I am an Aries which explains my ramrod approach and  that will help explain my message to you today.

We cannot let our guards down politically and we cannot lift our foot off the neck of this government until our objectives are achieved. Today the NRF is in full effect on the entire production base pre-November 19, 2008 and that means a light oil well making in excess of+/-  125 BOPD will be paying a +/- 50% GORR to the Crown. Is that competitive? Not when the maximum Crown royalty on a similar well in Saskatchewan would be 30%. Why was the reduction in the maximum royalties on conventional oil and gas wells not made effective immediately? Because this government still doesn’t get it. They are under qualified to govern and  because their financial situation is worse than they let are letting on. And they are still hoping for a miracle rebound in natural gas prices and they are hoping Albertans will remain apathetic.

Your donation and commitment to the Wildrose Alliance is making a huge difference in the attitude of this government and while we are not the government or the official opposition, I think you all need to take some credit for stalling the haphazard agenda this government has ongoing and at least partially reversing the now infamous “ New Royalty Framework (NRF)”.

Six or 7 changes and counting but the one change that will really count is the change in government that has to happen. And Albertans are with us. While we have a long way to go on many fronts, look at how far we have come.

If this article doesn’t get your blood boiling, maybe the thought of 7 more years of Mr. Ed or some other talking horse from the PC cabinet will be enough to get your goat. The talent pool within the PC caucus only has a shallow end since Guy Boutilier, Heather Forsyth and Rob Anderson left.

Are you prepared to say that this government understands Albertans and the economy and our deep concerns with respect to our seniors, healthcare, education, business and landowners rights? Have they been heard and properly dealt with? Were you properly consulted?

Are you sure that they have reversed direction and/or will never make the same mistakes again? In healthcare, education, energy, seniors issues, property rights? Are they capable?

Can you trust the Premier to reverse his own personal agenda, admit his mistakes, apologize for the NRF, cancel it and somehow get it right? He does not believe the NRF was the cause of the implosion.

Can you trust the Tory MLA’s to represent you and your constituents interests as opposed to the current top down PC ramrod policy where the constituents and MLA’s  are left out, and an inner circle of unelected bureaucrats calls all the shots ? They have not yet, what makes you think they are going to change? Rural voters can smell a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Are you concerned that this smug, arrogant government/PC party is flush with election war chest dollars that they will use to try and discredit you, the Wildrose Alliance, the Liberals and get the PC’s re-elected? Even worse, are you concerned that the Liberals could somehow elect more liberals to the legislature? If you said no I am not sure they get it or will ever get it then you will agree with me on this:

It is time, once again,  to step up, buck up and I am personally going to donate whatever I can, whatever my company can and whatever my family can to the Wildrose because I am very concerned that this government can somehow have a war chest of the size they are bragging about after all the mistakes they have made. They will use it to buy votes and  try to buy favour from those that have opposed them. Now we must stand up and go to the next level of commitment and that is for all Albertans to buck up and replace this PC Party/Government that has drifted so far away from the values we as Albertans hold so dear.

Free Enterprise, endless opportunities, the Alberta Advantage, the leading economy in Canada, smaller government, lower taxes, a stable, competitive, sustainable, predictable and equitable fiscal energy and tax policy; Sound good? How about adequate yet less intrusive, costly, time consuming regulatory burdens, enshrining and honouring property rights, democratic reform, citizen recall, citizens referendum, the Alberta Agenda, balanced budgets and a return to common sense government led by common sense MLA’s? MLA’s who are experienced government outsiders and who are elected to proudly serve Albertans and return to private life and practise. We need a constant influx of new people and blood and ideas and the younger people must be included as we go forward. Higher affordable state of the art education must be provided. Our younger adults are going to be highly educated and it is up to us to make sure that they are and they will need to learn the common and practical skills that are only learned from the experience of being hands on and getting dirty every now and then and working in the field with the experts. And boy do we have experts in rural Alberta. It is time for us urbanites to get out and smell the roses.

Rural Albertans know hard work and together we can “ Get it Right” and get this job done. It is up to us to restore the Alberta Advantage and prepare to retire and hand this off to our younger, well prepared leaders and our children knowing we did what we had to do, and that we did it for the right reasons and the Province is left well positioned to lead Canada and the world in agricultural production and technology, forestry products and forest management, medical services, technology and research, tourism and of course our number one industry; sustainable energy exploration, development and extraction that focuses on advanced environmental technology, educating the public and expanding and developing new markets in the decades ahead.

In Alberta we are blessed like no other place on earth and it is time we all realized it and time we took control of our Province and our families future. One way to ensure you will have a say in your future is to support a grassroots Wildrose, get involved, donate and join other concerned Albertans that just so happen to agree with you. We now have a base of members that fully represents the Alberta electorate and economy and we are all willing to sit down with fellow Albertans, free of government interference and listen and work through the issues that affect us all. Communication, planning and mutual respect for each other will see us through and out of it all will come a comprehensive policy framework that assures our prosperity in the years ahead.

We can accomplish this and take care of our cherished seniors, our environment, our less fortunate citizens that require our compassion and our members and we know how to do it. It starts with a commitment to remove the fat and the PC’s from government and replace it with a highly capable, knowledgeable, practical, common sense, efficient government that represents the interests of all Albertans and not just those that happen to be blue Tories that blindly fill the PC war chest. We need a government that is a facilitator, not a hindrance to economic development.

The doctors, the nurses, the care givers, the teachers and professors, the farmers, ranchers, landowners, professionals, small businessmen and women across the Province,  the junior and mid-cap oil and gas industry, the oil and gas service sector, the agricultural industry, the tourism industry, the hotel and restaurant industry, the Forestry industry; I know I have left somehow left someone out, so how about “Concerned Albertans” that have been wronged, ignored and don’t want any more BS, we just want this government out.

It will cost us but it will be well worth it. Pass this message along.

Please step up and join, volunteer/commit and/or donate. Get a membership book and sell 10 memberships. The get another one and repeat. Ask for a donation. If you know someone that you think would be an excellent candidate, please have them contact me at blaine.maller@wildrosealliance.ca . I know it seems that all we do is ask for money but we are building a party that is built from the ground up, from the blood, sweat, tears and the hard earned money of the grassroots. In exchange for that commitment, the grassroots calls the shots. The members decide who the leader will be and the policy and direction this party will take. Our leader, Danielle Smith, will lead us and deliver our message to Albertans and Canadians. If you have not heard Danielle speak, go see her and take a friend and I am confident that you will come out of that experience with a confidence that Danielle  is the new leader we in Alberta have been waiting for and she is a leader for all Albertans. We are so very proud of her at the Wildrose.

I am signed up to the monthly donations for $ 200/month which is $ 2400/year and is the maximum from a tax benefit basis. I am also committing to donating well in excess of that knowing that we may not need to match the PC’s in what we spend to contest the next election but also knowing it is not going to happen unless I and many others donate and commit to the cause. I am all in. I am donating to my Fish Creek CA as well. I know it is tedious and in the past we have not used seasoned political fundraisers. However, we are seasoned family and business people and we know common sense and we know we have to get rid of these guys and we know we have to buck up as it takes money to accomplish these goals. I have not been financially burdened by the money I have donated to date to the Wildrose, nor would I ask anyone to donate money they cannot afford. If you can’t donate money, donate your time and expertise as we all know time is money and the party needs volunteers in all constituencies and experts in all fields. Donate your ideas.

Look at the progress Wildrose has made with minimal funding, a commitment to what is right for Alberta families and businesses and a commitment to all those Albertans that have put their hopes and dreams and volunteer efforts into the Wildrose. We are now over 14,000 strong and we are determined and we are on the right side of the issues and we represent the New Alberta Advantage. We are committed, we are capable, and we will prevail.

Go to www.wildrosealliance.ca to join, donate, volunteer, get involved and to just keep up with the party. Thank you to all those that brought us to this point in time. History is in the making and you are a part of that and for that Albertans thank you and I thank you.

Champagne corks are popping in Tory land

The Alberta Conservatives might be down, but they’re not out. If they are out, it’s probably to go shopping — for Champagne, perhaps, to celebrate how much money they have. We’re talking good bubbly, not Baby Duck.

New financial statements reveal the Conservatives have more money than all the other parties combined. They raised almost $2.8 million in 2009, and ended up with a surplus of $400,000 for the year — an improvement over 2008. Add the surplus to money already in the bank and they have $2.4 million in savings. Wait, there’s more. The Conservatives also have a special savings fund that contains $1.6 million. The party usually spends just the interest earned each year from the fund, but in a pinch it can access more. So, add the money in the fund to the savings ($1.6 million plus $2.4 million) and you have a $4-million war chest. If you’re a Conservative, you’ll want to go shopping for Dom Perignon.

The documents show a party in good financial health with healthy support from industry. Enbridge Pipelines donated $11,000; Encana, $10,750; Syncrude, $8,975.

They lost the Calgary-Glenmore byelection to the Wildrose Alliance and two MLAs to floorcrossing and the public is losing confidence in Premier Ed Stelmach, but the party doesn’t have to worry where its next meal is coming from.

It’s a financial winner even when it’s a political loser. Just look at the Calgary-Glenmore byelection.

Oh, they might have suffered a crushing defeat on Sept. 14 by finishing third behind the Wildrose Alliance and Liberals, and their candidate, Diane ColleyUrquhart, might have blamed the loss on “a real deep dislike for the premier” by Calgarians, but the Tories made lots of money.

Colley-Urquhart raised just over $130,000 and spent $87,000 to end with a surplus of $43,000. (At this rate, the Tories could lose all 83 seats in the next election and walk away with $3.5 million).

The total spent by the Wildrose Alliance’s Paul Hinman on the byelection: $48,000, which left him with a surplus of $2,700. Liberal Avalon Roberts raised $35,770 and spent $35,770. Now that’s balancing the books. ColleyUrquhart spent $30 for each vote, Hinman spent $12 and Roberts spent about $9.50.

If armies march on their stomachs, political parties march on their bank accounts, and the Tories are the Energizer bunny of marchers. When it comes to raising money, they just keep going.

The Wildrose Alliance tripled its revenue in 2009 compared to 2008, but is still far behind the Conservatives in overall dollars. After raising almost $695,000 last year, the Wildrose war chest is at $196,000. Combing through the Wildrose list, you’ll discover the biggest donors aren’t big names: Questerre Energy and Cavendish Investing each gave $15,000.

The Liberals saw their donations drop in 2009 to $768,000 from $885,000 in 2008, but their glimmer of good news is the party’s $1-million debt has been whittled to $89,000. They’re within spitting distance of cracking open their own bubbly.

The worst financial news belongs to the New Democrats, whose debt has grown to $484,000. The financial statements give the Conservatives undisputed good news and the party’s president indulged in some gentle crowing.

“We all know that 2009 was a difficult year, but the encouragement offered to the PC party in the form of financial support during that time is most appreciated,” said Bill Smith in a written statement.

“Thousands of individuals, as well as numerous Alberta businesses, have chosen to support Premier Ed Stelmach, his team, and the constituency associations that are doing the groundwork in preparation for the next election.”

The adage that money can’t buy happiness is probably true for you and me, but not for political parties. Money can buy you advertising, strategists and glossy brochures — all the things you need for a happy election campaign. The Tories have a long list of problems. However, it would seem money isn’t one of them. “

2009- Lest We Forget

The year from hell that was 2009 is quickly drawing to an end and it could not come sooner for me and many Albertans that have weathered what amounted to the perfect storm. Poor foresight, even poorer hindsight and a premier that is big on the blame game, coupled with a dramatic and rather sudden collapse of the oil and gas markets, resulted in Alberta’s reputation sinking to depths not seen since the Getty days. The year witnessed Alberta’s economy plummeting to depths of despair unseen since the NEP of the early 1980‘s. Why?  What caused us to go from boom to bust in such a short period of time? Who is to be held responsible and accountable to Albertans?

Ed Stelmach, Mel Knight, Iris Evans, Ron Liepert, Ted Morton, and I could go on, are very much responsible for the investment meltdown in Alberta and in particular, the oil and gas sector. They are the leaders of the abandonment of fiscal conservatism. They abandoned our interests and are taking care of their own. They were eleted to represent southern Albertans but once elected, beagn immediately to suffer from dome sickness which has been known to cause swollen heads and egos and aloss of brain function which has resulted in sever and chronic pains to Albertans arsses.

They have driven in excess of $ 100 Billion from the future Alberta economy and delayed development in this Province of untold opportunities that could have, should have and would have been implemented if these people mentioned above had listened and understood the experts and had not been bent on getting more than their fair share. They sat back and orchestrated the event and watched as Albertans lost their jobs and towns lost businesses and people and hope. They took our number one and a very robust Albterta oil and gas industry and have drove it out of the province. And now they hope things get better; that gas goes to $ 9/GJ and oil to $ 150/Bbl and then junior oil and gas won't mind paying 100% royalty increases? Not likely going to happen. We need more than hope. We need change, new blood, capable and qualified leadership that has the support of Albertans.

If this cabinet knew anything at all about what they were doing and how devastating the effects of their misjudgements have been on ordinary Albertans, they would have reversed course over 2 years ago, cancelled implementation of the New Royalty Framework (NRF) and done what smart politicians would have done; admiotted their mistake, corrected it, relied on expert and varied sources of information and advice in lieu of the fact you have no expertise of your own. They did not, they will not and they must go. Each and every one of these negligent ministers and especially the nice premier has to go to the hearing clinic as they all have a severe hearing disability. They no longer represent our best interests, if they ever did.

The cost to average Albertans is enormous. Lost jobs for parents and new grads, failed businesses, broken up marriages and families, domestic violence, suicide, alcoholism and depression. These are just some of Ed and Mel’s “Unintended Consequences”. It is unacceptable and must be corrected.

Let’s take a look at the government’s website and their list of priorities. http://priorities.alberta.ca/

“Five Priorities for Alberta

There is tremendous opportunity to make the Alberta of tomorrow even better than it is today. To accomplish this, the Government of Alberta has laid out five priorities to guide its work.

Creating opportunity. Alberta has a strong economy and creating opportunities will grow the economy for future generations. The government’s plan is to build on traditional sectors – energy, agriculture and forestry – while creating more value-added opportunities.

A Healthy Approach.  Alberta’s health care system needs to put patients first – that’s the key focus for improving the system. It’s all part of making sure the right health services are there when Albertans need them, today and in the future.

Building Tomorrow. Alberta’s largest-ever investment in infrastructure is more than building new roads, schools and hospitals; it’s about maintaining what already exists. This means making sure dollars are spent wisely and growth is anticipated.

Resourceful. Responsible.  Alberta is Canada’s energy province and that means developing the resources and protecting the environment.

Strong Communities.  Living in strong communities means feeling safe and secure; having a deep sense of belonging; and having access to a vibrant arts and cultural scene. “

Have they delivered on these priorities? Is this as deep as the thinking gets? This propaganda, in my mind, clearly points out that we need a healthcare system that puts patients first. This implies that it currently does not. They are going to spend our dollars wisely implies that they have not done that to date. We know that. They have killed the conventional oil and gas industry, drove Big Oil $ away and junior oil and gas has, if at all possible, been sold, packed up and left or are owner by their bankers; many are stalled in Alberta. Yet they acknowledge that Alberta is an energy province and we need to develop our resources? No it does not make any sense.

The PC dynasty will, with your help, soon  be a footnote in the history books and a new book full of promise, ideas, vision and compassion is being written and a real true conservative leader is capturing Albertans hearts and imaginations. The clouds are lifting, the Wildrose and Danielle Smith are allowing us to see again and yes there is light at the end of the tunnel. And one more thing, it is because of the emergence of the Wildrose Alliance Party.  This government would not be in full retreat if not for Danielle Smith and the Wildrose. Albertans are stopping to smell the roses and they like the fragrance. They like what they are hearing and seeing.

Danielle Smith and the Wildrose Alliance Party are very much on their way to winning over the hearts, minds and imaginations of Albertans. Danielle is a captivating leader. She draws people to her and she has the ability to win over even many of her adversaries with intelligent, well thought out and visionary ideas that Albertans will like and support. She thinks on her feet and she doesn’t sit on her hands or cover her ears. She does this with a smile and with a style that disarms people and make them fell comfortable.

Smaller government, less intrusion in our daily lives and businesses, less red tape, a smaller more efficient bureaucracy, the restoration of seniors benefits, support for the most vulnerable of our society , enshrining property rights and protecting free speech, responsible environmental policies that allow development and reclamation at a sustainable and acceptable rate. Profit is a good thing in entrepreneurial Alberta. We need to support and encourage the success of all Albertans and their businesses. We need to take care of our cherished seniors and rely on their advice and experience. We need to treat our seniors the way we would want to be treated and we better remember that we will all be seniors some day.

And, of course, Danielle Smith and the Wildrose will restore our competitive advantage that has been taken up by our friendly neighbours to the east, west and south.

What’s bad for Alberta has been a boon for Saskatchewan and BC. They should put a statue of Stelmach up in Regina and Victoria and hail him as a hero. If I were those 2 provinces I would be contributing big money to Ed’s re-election campaign. The out of province premier that has done more for the economies of Saskatchewan and BC than Brad Wall and Gordon Campbell could have ever dreamed of.

Where would Alberta based oil and gas producers be if Saskatchewan and BC had not pulled their heads out of the socialist sand and realized the golden opportunity facing their provinces? All that capital looking for a new home; why not do everything you can to attract that from Alberta businesses and out of province investors. Especially since it was looking for a new home. That was vision and leadership.

Mel Knight says we are not competing with Saskatchewan and BC. He is bang on about that. We are not competitive – period. Once again the government is totally out of sync with the energy industry timelines for budgets, planning and winter access. But our cousins on either side are very competitive, they were very smart, they listened  to the economic experts and they have enshrined fiscal policies that incent the oil and gas industry and attract capital and other businesses; away from Alberta.

Now BC is a quasi-socialist province, so they have plenty of other issues to tackle before they get this true conservative to give them a grading above a passing C. But their oil and gas policy gets an A.  Saskatchewan gets an A+.  Brad Wall is the big benefactor from the largess and sheer stupidity that is our PC government.

Alberta and the Stelmach Tories get a big fat F. They have failed us and they have failed their own party and rural supporters, their friends, their families and the businesses of their constituents. They are a colossal failure and disappointment and Albertans must now realize that these PC MLA’s are only out for their own good and couldn’t care less about you and me. This is their last chance to cash in and cash in they will. Let’s put these hapless PC MLA’s out to pasture and secure them with a high elk and buffalo farm style fence around them.

Join the cause of the Wildrose and let’s support Danielle Smith and the party that has Albertans best interests at heart and respects each and every Albertan and each and every industry.

Together we can “Get it Right”. There is no other alternative. Change from within is not happening and even if it did, we would have another under qualified Stelmach Tory in charge.

Let’s thank our lucky stars that we have the Wildrose Alliance Party and Danielle Smith and the growing support of concerned Albertans who encourage entrepreneurship, disdain big government and will rely on the expertise and ingenuity of Albertans to regain  Alberta’s competitive advantage and restore our faith in government, each other and our capabilities as a province.

Lest we forget 2009.

crnredtankcopy-copy-1.jpg

Premier Ed, his new tag, is a new man and he is on a new mission. He has a new way of reaching out and touching Albertans via the social media and networking circuit. He can’t trust our media to get his message out and across to Albertans so he is going to do it himself.

The twerps are tweeting and if you want the answers to all those tough questions facing Albertans in energy, healthcare, education, free speech, property rights and seniors issues, just tweet the twerps and you will get your fair share of bird feed. Same old tired uninformed responses to the same old tough questions facing Albertans.

And now the competitiveness review report that we have all been so desperately waiting for is off, according to Premier Ed, until the end of January at the earliest. But don’t worry, Ed is on it and Ed has seen the light. How about an observation and a prediction? The PC’s are in deep doo-doo, they are self destructing and there is no way Premier Ed and many of his PC MLA sidekicks are going to make it past the next election. And the PC's have no one to blame but themselves. He's the man with 77% support. It gets hard to find a new crew when the ship is listing and plunging into the abyss. The PC's are being systemically dismantled across Alberta. The crew is abandoning ship. The captain and ships officers are cracking open another bottle of rum. Is anyone watching out for the rocks?

But in Ed’s world, it has nothing to do with him or his red and dead Tory policies, slashed seniors benefits, the New Royalty Framework, overspending, under-achieving, over-regulating, the ripping up of contracts, Bill 50, Section 3 or the creation of total uncertainty in Alberta regarding energy policy and investment and government back tracking and tinkering with the royalty regime.

It has nothing to do with out of control spending and running record deficits. It has nothing to do with the Stelmach PC's ill fated trek to the left or the pork barrel politics that Albertans have come to loathe. It has nothing to do with the abandonment of true conservative values and principles. It has nothing to do with a complete and total breakdown of the democratic process within the PC party. It has nothing to do with top down, ill advised, poorly researched and implemented policy that alienates Albertans. It has nothing to do with the Stelmach PC's and the government? How stupid does he think we are.

Bill 50 was the last straw for rural Albertans. The H1N1 rollout was a deep look inside the government at a time of crisis. The NRF is a disaster. Section 3 remains. Seniors benefits have not been restored. Healthcare delivery is getting worse, not better.

No one could have predicted what was going to happen in the global economy and no one predicted the collapse of commodity prices or pointed out the risk of unsustainable double digit spending increases? No one in the government that is. They were repeatedly warned by many, many Albertans. Hold it, I correct myself. There were some people in the government that seemed to understand including the last 3 Finance Ministers who publically stated that what they were about to spend was unsustainable. They said this as they signed the cheques. The New Royalty Framework (NRF) is still the right policy for Albertans, according to Premier Ed and his faithful companions Mel, Iris, Ron and Allison and all our PC MLA's.

The NRF is the problem, this Premier and PC MLA's are the problem and they must be replaced and the NRF must be cancelled and a new competitive, predictable, equitable, profitable and sustainable royalty regime must emerge. But the Wildrose should not be rolling that plan out until the writ is dropped. Void of any ideas of their own, the Stelmach Tories will try and steal those policies in a desperate attempt to cling to power.

I was doing my laundry the other day and cling frees work great.

I wish I had something like that for this Premier and government. My goal is to rid this Province of red and dead Tories clinging to positions of influence and power and restore Alberta as the leading economy in Canada. We are a resource based economy, our livelihoods depend on the extraction of these resources and we better restore the balance needed for us all to prosper.

Ask our employers and business leaders and those unemployed and under-employed if this poorly conceived and poorly thought out energy policy has been a success or a complete and utter failure and a betrayal of Albertans and the Alberta way.

So after the systemic damage is done and the house has burned to the ground, Premier Ed arrives with a squirt gun to put out the fire.

What does the average Albertan want? A job for one. A promising future for our families and profitable businesses. Careers for our kids within the Province. Excellent care for our treasured seniors. Less and more competent and efficient government, lower taxes, less intrusion in our lives, an end to growing government, over-regulation and costly red tape; healthcare under regional and expert control and a decentralized government that gets the hell out of our way and listens to us and respects us.

Albertans, I suspect, want less government that respects seniors, free speech, property rights, our number one industry and all businesses and the expertise of the experts in this great Province.

The Premier and government have done nothing to instil confidence in the Alberta electorate and they are directly responsible for the lions share of the damage to Alberta's economy. Instead Premier Ed has alienated every Albertan in some way with every policy initiative they have rolled out. It is one disaster after another, mistake after mistake and Albertans are fed up, have had enough and are actively doing something about it.

His attack on the Wildrose is hollow. He asks for Wildrose policies as he distracts attention from his own utter failures. He underestimates the intelligence of Albertans and the resolve to get it right.

Wildrose and leader Danielle Smith have already had a major effect on Alberta politics. They are providing Albertans an effective intelligent, articulate voice and opposition and Wildrose is forcing the Stelmach PC's to stop dead in their tracks and try to retrace their steps. Ahh but global warming is but a myth in these parts and the snow storm has covered all their tracks and they are disoriented and without a compass and will not find their way home. Not this time. What to do, what to do.

So Ed will makes things much clearer if he could just bypass the local media and reach out directly to Albertans. And so we waited with baited breath for the re-packaging of the message in terms we could all understand.

How about an example of Premier Ed’s new clear, concise, direct approach, and I quote;

“Did anybody, any of these gurus anticipate what was going to happen (with shale gas) when we were going through the royalty review? Not one”

“If they would have, they would have made their presentation on shale gas. Never heard about it. Now, all of a sudden.......it’s very easy to predict the past. Anybody can do that. Tell me about the future”

And this gem;

“It will be moving from conventional to unconventional and what is it going to take? That doesn’t mean we won’t be looking at the conventional gas side. On conventional oil, there are some areas there on the regulatory side and on the production side, on the investment side, that we will look at”

I guess they haven’t got around to that in the many months this competitiveness review has been ongoing. Hope you got the gist of that.

Want another gem? From December 17 edition of the Calgary Herald and an article written by Jason Fekete.

“We’ve got to be careful here because there are those who hold senior positions that may be making comments and taking positions, and then there’s the voter out there as well. That’s the balance. My job here is to make sure we have good investment, a good environment for investment”

That clears it all up. Thank God the Premier can bypass the local media and get a clear concise message out to Albertans, although it is taped or recorded or precisely quoted and noone understands a word he said.

We can all sleep well now with visions of sugar plums dancing in our heads.

Merry Christmas Alberta

Be Wary of Wild Rose Alliance’s thorns ? Really? Stop and Smell the Roses.

This article recently appeared in the Sherwood Park News and was written by Catherine Griwkowsky and if you do not agree, here is her email and you can email her and tell her exactly what you think at Catherine@sherwoodparknews.com

This lame article is an affront to all Albertans who are fed up with the Stelmach Tories and who seek a new party with solutions instead of tired old policies and worn out criticisms. Wildrose and Danielle Smith do not engage in personal attacks.  Danielle and the Wildrose will stick to the issues of the day; the concerns of Albertans with respect to healthcare, energy policy, property rights, education, Seniors issues and MLA and Ministerial compensation. link

Click on the link and read what Catherine wrote and read fro yourself. You be the judge. A full retraction must be printed and an apology is owed to Albertans who have joined the Wildrose Alliance Party.

Now this may just have something to do with the Stelmach Tories and their dirty deeds done at our great expense. I have to think this is just another planted Tory influenced article that is meant to inflame northern Albertans and mislead them and misinform them and strike fear in the electorate of this new and rather interesting Wildrose Alliance Party. It is not going to work. Albertans are smarter than the Tories give them credit for.

Nothing new from the Tories. But it has been far from dirt cheap for Albertans. The cost of this government’s incompetence, indifference and confrontational approach is huge. By my tally, unofficial of course, we have over 4 billion reasons to rid ourselves of the hapless, incompetent and old and tired Stelmach PC government. It is the Stelmach Tories 38 year addiction to power that is wreaking havoc across Alberta communities. It is their addiction to spending that has led us into  record deficit territory. The last cuts to come will come from the Premier and PC/Liberal MLA's. And now Speaker King Kowalsky says not on his watch. He is a pure example of what has gone old and stale in the PC fold. Thirty years of his antics is more than this Albertan can handle. They are not true conservatives. They are "The Red and The Dead Stelmach Tories". I put that in quotations hoping I will be quoted. The press gets it; Albertans get it, why not the Stelmach Tories? Go figure.

Of course you have to admit you have a problem before you can begin to deal with it. And Premier Stelmach and his Ministers refuse to admit their mistakes. Those are the mistakes of others. Yes, you and me. It is our fault and I readily admit the mistake of voting for these progressives. We actually had Minister Liepert blaming Albertans for the H1N1 pandemic line-ups. We were causing a stampede. What a shame. No one could have predicted the rise of shale gas in the USA? Hogwash. The Barnett shale has been around for years as have most of the others. It was the Premier and his Ministers that didn't have the knowledge or draw upon those that did, to see what the trends in our number one industry were. These were not overnight sensations as the Premier would like Albertans to think. These were gradual trial and error, R&D and typical of oilfield tools and how they get developed and perfected. If he a friend in the oil industry, he would have known. The rollout of the influenza vaccine simply exposed the incompetence of the health Minister and government. Again. This time on healthcare. Is anyone keeping track? I am.

This government and Ministers have been in denial since they came into office. Of course, in their defence, ignorance is bliss. And when we get misinformed, poorly informed, poorly educated ministers in portfolios they have little, if any experience in, the bureaucracy takes over. When the bureaucrats start running the show, we are in big trouble. They have been running the show since premier Klein left office.

Many of you know that I have had enough, have heard enough and I will admit there is nothing this government could do to convince me that they have seen the light and understand the error of their ways and the damage they have caused to the Alberta and Canadian economy. Quite the contrary. But I am just another Albertan who is a true conservative and believes this government and its Ministers have abandoned conservatism and the "Alberta Way".

We as Albertans have been living with our heads buried in the political sandbox and I will be the first to admit that I should have gotten all over these guys a lot sooner than I did.  Apathy and procrastination is a killer of energy, drive, enthusiasm, ideas and democracy. So is this premier and government.

The problem we now face in Alberta politics is that our government has taken on the holier than art thou attitude; they know best and if you don't like it you are somehow a bad Albertan and a far right nutcase. In other words the premier and government know what's best for us and we better just fall in line.

The retribution that is being rained down on true conservatives within the PC party is also unprecedented. Life long, trustworthy and true conservatives are being threatened and bullied  and told they better hold the party line or else. That line is a little trampled now and faded as a stampede or exodus is happening. True conservatives and concerned Albertans in general are joining and supporting the Wildrose Alliance Party which now has +/- 13,000 members and is growing exponentially. If you are a Stelmach Tory, that means very fast.

Now this is the dead season for Alberta politics and Albertans no doubt have had our fair share of abuse and surprises this past year or two but common sense was supposed to prevail. Sadly the Stelmach PC's, for all their rural roots, have very little common sense. They have nothing but disdain for southern Albertans and the oil and gas industry that employs as many as 800,000 Albertans directly or indirectly. Yes, 800,000. This is another number the Tories don't get.

The Stelmach Tories have no respect for property rights; witness Bill 50. They do not respect free speech. Dr. Duckett has called nurses lazy, tea sipping slackers. Liepert blames Albertans. Iris says she didn't see it coming, no one could have predicted this and that. Ed is on it. Absolute bunk. I can see how a nurse may not have the background to manage a $ 37 Billion budget and a finance portfolio. And is Mel Knight qualified to run what amounts to the largest oil and gas company in the province? Not in my lifetime. Premier Ed is on it? God help us.

And what of the Health Minister, Crocodile Duckett and his bedside manner? I spent the month of August in the Rockyview Hospital and the respect I have for those nurses, doctors, NA's and healthcare workers and support staff is so high, I cannot decribe it. When you get sick and you know nothing about what your problem is, you need the experts to save your life. They are truly the best this province has to offer and not once did they get political or bad mouth anyone. They were always cheerful even though they were always under a lot of strain. They simply did their jobs and I cannot tell you how difficult that is these days.

Not once, when I wanted to talk to a nurse, did I find them on a break or sipping tea. They are swamped; there is no time for breaks. You take one if you can and you sip on the fly.  A NA is not qualified to do a nurses job and that was very apparent but their warmth and generosity is crucial to recovery and attitudes. Thanks to the Rockyview and all those I met. I will now defend you to the end and to a new beginning.

There was also a time when the oil and gas industry and the development of the oilsands was employing thousands of people outside the province, in particular Ontario. At a time when the auto industry was collapsing, the oilsands employed many manufacturers in Ontario to produce equipment that was to be put into service in one of the oilsands plants or upgraders. It was keeping many companies afloat. And now?

But when the Stelmach PC's decided to unilaterally change the rules of the game (Massive Royalty Increases) in the middle of the game and  rip up contracts, the industry and investment community became very skittish. Had the PC Tories understood the economy, what fuels it and employs Albertans, they never would have ventured down that path.  And they were warned time and again. Alas, here we are.

What a disgrace. What a disappointment. A pure betrayal of what we as Albertans have worked so hard for and have staked our livelihoods on. It is a fatal mistake for the Stelmach Tories and Albertans are ready to toss this government asap. We need MLA's that defend and promote the interests of their constituents. We need a vision, a leader and a purpose and this government has none of the above.

So if you agree with me, do  not fear this government and the threats that are raining down on what were their biggest supporters. There is strength and some comfort in numbers.  Or as some might say, misery loves company. I am here to fight for Albertans rights and for their families and businesses. I am here to support doctors, nurses, seniors, teachers and workers that are caught in the middle. I am determined to get it right.

If there is one thing I have learned in my lifetime it is that a bully needs a punch in the nose. It is the only way to stop the bullying. If it takes several punches, so be it. Time for them to go, they have overstayed their welcome by more than a few years. Time for change. Time for new ideas and approaches; for new, young, enthusiastic and energetic blood. Time for change. Time to stop and smell the roses.

Now that you have read what I have said, do I sound like the KKK or a far right wing redneck, separatist plague. Not at all. That is an insult to Albertans inteligence. I bet I sound just like most Albertans. Oh and separation?

I want to separate the Stelmach PC's from the seat of government and any political influence. I want to separate fact from fiction, reality from blatant fabrications and untruths. I want to separate PC politics from porkbarral business grants and loans tp PC party loyalists. I want to separate oil from sand and water from oil and sell it to whoever wants to buy it and employ people in Alberta. I want a healthy thriving energy industry that leads the world in innovation and environmental technology. I want to look out for the best interests of Albertans.

If you are a Stelmach Tory , Albertans have seen and had enough of you.

Premier Stelmach to Lead Stelmach Tories in 2012

Who really won and who are the real losers?

Let’s put this into perspective for Albertans.

It comes as no surprise that premier Stelmach survived the leadership vote. The 77.4% of the votes cast for the premier are a clear indication of just how little influence fiscal conservatives have with the Stelmach Tories and how far they have slid in PC patrty influence. The endorsement of Ed last weekend should wake up Albertans to what is really happening inside the PC Caucus and inside the party.

This is not about Alberta and Albertans, it is about the premier keeping the best job he ever had and for which he is totally unqualified. It is all about stifling any potential opposition from the southern PC caucus members and would be leadership hopefuls from Calgary and southern Alberta. This was a battle within the PC party; between north and south caucus members and between recently self proclaimed fiscal conservatives and spendthrift Stelmach loyalists. It was an internal political battle between supporters of Ed and supporters of anyone but Ed. It was a battle between those in the PC party that see the writing on the wall and those that still have their heads buried in the sand and believe they will forever be able to manipulate the process and have a right to rule us peasants. It was a battle for Alberta political power. Ed won; Calgary and southern Alberta MLA’s and Albertans lost.

The PC party tactics used to scare, intimidate, confuse and otherwise control the outcome of the leadership vote are nothing new. Numbered ballots were enough to convince many voting delegates in attendance that the secret ballot is never a secret. But do Stelmach loyalists have any teeth? Apparently so. Just ask Guy Boutilier. It is obvious that the premier and Guy Boutilier have not seen eye to eye for a long time. Guy’s battle over a new long term care facility in the Ft. Mac area is well known. He called out the premier on a promise the premier made to build this facility. When Ed reneged on his promise, he left Guy to answer to Ft. Mac constituents on behalf of the premier and government and take the heat. Guy refused and stood up for his principles and his constituents interests and for that we should put up a statue of him in the legislature where all MLA’s could see it and learn something from it. Instaed he gets kicked to t
he curb. Can Ed be trusted? Is he good for his word? No he is not. Or should I say he knows not waht he does. So remember that when Ed promises us something. What good are promises if they are not respected and upheld? They are not worth a pinch of coon $%^&*.

The PC strategy has been to pit Albertan against Albertan, rural vs urban, the oil industry and development vs the public, north vs south, individual property rights vs the governments Bill 50 and power lines, free speech vs the Human Rights Commission, consumers vs producers, producers vs regulators, the public vs, in the words of Dr. Stephen Duckett, loitering tea
sipping nurses, etc, etc, etc.

The pattern is very clear. Their strategy is Divide and Conquer. They do it within the PC caucus and they apply it across Alberta. It is beneath us as Albertans. The power struggle lamely appeared to be in the provincial caucus and now southern Alberta and Calgary MLA’s have been told to go back home, shut up and toe the line. Ed is your man, like it or lump it. There will be no leadership questions going into the next general election and anyone who had aspirations of challenging Ed for that role has been pushed to the curb, they just got Boutiliered.

Ted Morton, Jim Dinning, Jim Prentice, Allison Redford, Brett Wilson and anyone else who was mentioned as a potential saviour of the PC party, have been told that Ed still controls caucus and nothing has changed. You will not be needed. Now think about this. Can Alberta afford another Stelmach win in 2012?

Not in my lifetime. He could re-jig every policy, withdraw Bill 50 and Section 3, cancel the New Royalty Framework and never again regain the credibility and trust that is required to rebuild our Alberta advantage and restore confidence in Alberta fro
m outside let alone inside.

A new leader and party can restore confidence in Alberta and re-establish trust between business and government and restore confidence in Alberta and large investments from the capital markets. What is to say that Ed wouldn’t make more poorly thought out policy changes down the road when and if the economy recovers? He has done it before and his promises do not hold water and we should not place our trust in anyone that has broken promises. Just ask Guy and Ft. MacMurray constituents.

It is sad that we have come to expect this from the PC’s. Business requires a long term stable, predictable, competitive fiscal policy and that is not possible coming from these Stelmach PC’s who ripped up our reputation as the best place to do business in Canada. That would require this government to admit to their mistakes, take responsibility for their failures and correct the inequities of policies and unintended consequences they neither had the foresight to predict nor the intestinal fortitude to cancel once the “Unintended Consequences” became obvious. They are oblivious.

This government cannot be trusted and that is the essence of the problems we will continue to experience over the next several years. We have lost trust in our premier and his ministers and PC MLA’s. There is no getting it back under the Stelmach PC’s.

And what of the “Fickle Fiscal Four” ? Too little, too late. Sorry but your pronouncements are not going to make us forget where you have been for the last several years and this sudden change of heart will not get you re-elected as a Stelmach Tory. This is simply an attempt to salvage small parts of their reputations here in Calgary where their inaction, silence, inability and past unwillingness to stand up for their newfound principles are well known. The bogus attempts to get the message through to Ed were painfully inadequate over the last 3 years. They simply have let us down.

Now we have several more PC MLA’s in Calgary and we have not heard a word from them. Don’t hold your breath. Ted and Jim will not be premier; time to go back to your stall. Let me ask the Calgary Caucus if they are OK with that. Are you going to ask Ed to knock on doors with you in 2012? Ask DCU how that worked out in Calgary-Glenmore. She was literally run off
at the door. Ed has you walking the plank. You can either jump in and swim for shore or you can go down with the ship. It is your choice. Ed or your constituents? True conservatism vs Ed’s way? Either way you have to get wet and the water is very deep and getting a lot colder.

So where does one go if you have been ignored, ridiculed, marginalized and told your fiscal conservative opinions and that of your constituents don’t matter? To the Wildrose Alliance Party. There is comfort in confession. They say it is good for the soul. Calgary PC MLA’s need to look in the mirror. The longer they remain silent and disengaged, the less chance the confession will be real and belive me a confession must be forthcoming. Wilfully following a party line that you know will get you defeated is kind of like committing political suicide.

So who won? Stelmach lives to fight ano
ther election as leader of the PC Tories. His Ministers will stay put or he will shuffle the deck chairs on his sinking ship. Will it make a difference? Not a chance. The arrogance, incompetence and sense of entitlement, a liberal trait, is out there for all to see. Calgary and southern Alberta can shut the hell up. The rural northern Stelmach loyalists outnumber the southern non-loyalists and PC’s from Calgary and southern Alberta may have to live with that for another 7-8 years? God help us. We cannot let that happen.

The Stelmach Tories must be defeated and replaced. This Province deserves better leadership and much more highly educated and qualified Ministers and MLA’s. Danielle Smith and the Wildrose Alliance will bring that to the table and all Albertans will be the beneficiaries. Join Danielle Smith and the Wildrose Alliance Party (www.wildrosealliance.ca ) and let’s end this dynasty of broken promises, big and bigger government, growing record deficits, bureaucratic inefficiencies, endless red tape, cronyism, pork barrel politics, mismanagement and ministerial incompetence.

Sound like a big job? You bet it is. But it must be done so let’s get after it and “Let’s Make it Happen”. Together we can build an Alberta economy that we can all thrive in and be proud of and that will lead this province and country to great accomplishments while providing a bright future for our families, friends and businesses.
